The Governor's Energy Office (GEO)

About Us

The Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation (GEMC) was created in 1977 to promote energy conservation in Colorado. In 2007, the name was changed to the Governor's Office of Energy Development (GODE), so that the office could do more to support clean energy initiatives. Finally, in 2011, Governor Michael Hickenlooper took over charge of GODE and re-named it Governor's Energy Office (GEO). In January 2014, the GEO opened its new headquarters in Downtown Denver.

The Colorado Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) is a division of the Governor’s Office that serves as the principal information and technical resource for issues pertaining to energy development, use and conservation in Colorado. GEO helps government agencies and institutions develop programs that advance A. Energy savings, B. Ensuring affordable, clean, reliable power generation options and C. Sustainability of our environment and economy.

As part of the Governor’s Energy Office, we help Colorado businesses increase energy efficiency, while decreasing their cost of operating and increasing their bottom line. We do this through a variety of services that are designed to help business owners be successful.

Governor John Hickenlooper's Energy Office is committed to advancing sustainable economic development through energy market advancement and investment. This office's primary goal is to create jobs that spur innovation, preserve our natural environment, and ensure low cost, safe, and reliable generation and consumption of energy. Through GEO, Governor Hickenlooper ensures Colorado remains a national model for the best renewable energy practices.

Our mandate is to promote market-based solutions for economic development, and minimize the true, total cost of energy for Colorado. We do this by removing market barriers and improving access to information, financing, and know-how, thus kick-starting stalled markets, and streamlining regulatory burdens.

We are proud to be recognized by the State of Colorado’s Environmental Leadership Program with a “Gold Leader” designation. The program is a statewide environmental recognition and reward program administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Sustainability Program. Gold Leaders, like the GEO, are those facilities that have a fully operational, facility-specific Environmental Management System (EMS) in place.

GEO Programs

Colorado is a leader in providing clean and renewable forms of energy—and the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) plays a critical role in charting that leadership. At the GEO, we work with communities, utilities, private and public organizations and individuals to promote renewable energy such as wind, solar and geothermal, as well as energy-efficiency technologies in commercial and residential buildings. We implement our work through a variety of programs and partnerships. You can find information about the GEO’s current programs by clicking the links below. In addition to the programs listed, the GEO also offers grants for energy-efficiency and renewable energy projects in partnership with the State of Colorado.
